Meaning

A systematic and disciplined investigation that uses evidence to describe, explain, predict, understand or solve a problem.

Purposes

Explore the unknown; describe “what is”; explain “why”; predict; test theory; evaluate action; solve problems; inform policy/practice.

Knowledge cycle

Existing knowledge → gap/question → evidence → interpretation → revised knowledge. Research is self-correcting, not a final oracle.

Teacher says: Searching the internet is information retrieval. It becomes research only when the question, method, evidence and inference form a justified chain.
NET trap: Research need not always “prove” a hypothesis. Exploratory and qualitative studies may generate concepts, meanings or hypotheses.

Trap: A study can be simultaneously applied, quantitative, explanatory, longitudinal and field-based. These are different classification axes, not mutually exclusive boxes.

Reality is treated as objective and governed by discoverable regularities. Knowledge comes from observable, measurable evidence; researcher aims for detachment, control, prediction and verification.

NET trap: Post-positivism does not deny reality. It says our knowledge of reality remains approximate, corrigible and open to disconfirmation.

Good problem

Clear, researchable, significant, feasible, ethical, delimited and linked to a gap.

Objective

Action statement: explore, describe, compare, explain, evaluate or predict. It tells what the study will accomplish.

Hypothesis

A testable prediction about difference or relationship. Not compulsory in every research tradition.

Research design = master plan

Aligns question, participants/sources, variables or concepts, evidence collection, analysis, validity/quality and ethics.

Operational clarity

Abstract idea → observable rule. “Academic engagement” may be defined through attendance, task completion and a validated scale score.

Describe accurately before trying to explain

Core purpose

Systematically describe characteristics, frequencies, trends or relationships as they exist—without manipulating variables.

NET trap: “Descriptive” does not mean casual narration. It can use rigorous sampling, validated tools and statistics—but cannot by itself establish cause.

Context matters

Who produced it, for whom, why, under what power relations, and what is absent?

External vs internal: External criticism checks genuineness—date, authorship, material, provenance. Internal criticism checks meaning and trustworthiness—competence, motive, bias and corroboration.
Trap: Old document ≠ automatically reliable primary source. Authenticity and credibility are separate tests.

Mixed methods: Integrates both evidence languages when one alone cannot answer the full question. Integration—not simply collecting two kinds of data—is the defining idea.
Trap: Quantitative is not always deductive, and qualitative is not always inductive. These are common tendencies, not absolute rules.

Real-life loop: Literature may refine the question; a pilot may change the tool; analysis may reveal missing context. Iteration is disciplined learning—not careless backtracking.

Sequence trap: Decide design and ethical safeguards before collecting data. Do not “choose statistics first” and then invent a question to fit.

Golden rule: University/journal guidelines are the final authority for order, formatting and word limits. The architecture here is a strong general template.

Two systems: Notes–Bibliography or Author–Date. Humanities often use notes; sciences/social sciences may use author–date.

Trap: Anonymity means identity is not known/linkable to the researcher; confidentiality means identity may be known but is protected from unauthorized disclosure.

Academic Integrity Checkpoint — UGC 2018

Similarity levels are thresholds, not a substitute for judgment

Minor similarities; no penalty.

Student thesis: revised script within a stipulated period not exceeding 6 months.

Level 2

Above 40%–60%

Student thesis: debarred from submitting revised script for one year.

Level 3

Above 60%

Student registration for that programme cancelled.

Exclusions from similarity check

Properly permitted/attributed quotations; references, bibliography, table of contents, preface and acknowledgements; generic terms, laws, standard symbols/equations. Regulations also note common knowledge or coincidental terms up to 14 consecutive words.

Publication penalties differ

Level 1: withdraw manuscript. Level 2: withdraw + denial of one increment + no new supervision for 2 years. Level 3: withdraw + denial of two successive increments + no new supervision for 3 years.
